Car Seat Safety is one of my biggest concerns as a mother. Nothing gets me more upset than to see a child inappropriately restrained in a car or a car seat that is incorrectly installed. Here in my home we practice what is called extended rear facing. My daughter who is 22 months still rear faces in her car seat because it is proven the safest position for all children riding in a car.
According to the NHTSA, 3 out of 4 children are not secure in their car seats because the seats are not correctly installed.
As part of Child Passenger Safety Week – September 19 -25th, 2010 the Child Passenger Safety group is trying to change those statistics. You can find instructional videos and detailed diagrams on their website to help you know if your child is a safe and secure in your car.
Or, if you would prefer, you can bring your car seat to any of the participating car seat safety checks on Saturday, September 25th and they will make sure your seat is properly installed for free. Click here for a location close to you.
Also, if you have child car seat and safety questions you can join the the Child Passenger Safety Twitter Party (@childseatsafety) Wednesday, September 22 at 2 p.m. EST. NHTSA experts will be available to offer information and insight on car seats and how to travel safely with children. Just use the hashtag #CPSweek to follow along and ask your questions.
Please make a concerted effort to make sure that your children are safe in their car seats and in your cars. Also, please pass this information on to anyone that you think could benefit.
