Book Praise: Little Star

December 29, 2010 By Melanie

Several years ago, when my son was learning about Christmas in preschool, he became obsessed with having a star on top of our tree. We searched store after store to find the perfect star. When I had the opportunity to review this new children’s book, “The Little Star” by Anthony DeStefano, I was certain that my son was going to love it.

The story begins with a young boy looking into the dark sky asking his father about the Christmas star. His dad begins to tell a fictional story about a tiny little star way out in the universe. The story is similar to Rudolph in which the little star is small, dim and different. He is made fun of because he does not shine as brightly as the other stars. My son was very sad upset that the stars treated the little star in this manner. It gave us a wonderful opportunity to talk about accepting people regardless of their weaknesses or differences.

As the story progresses we are introduced to God’s plan for a King to be born. The big popular stars are not interested in this tiny baby, they are disappointed, but The Little Star, realizes that it is the King he is just tiny like himself. So, he begins to shine as bright as possible ultimately giving his all for Jesus.

My son and I both were very sad about the Little Star burning out but it was the perfect opportunity to discuss about how we should give our all to Jesus. The story also allows for a deeper discussion about how even though our Saviour died, he is still ALIVE in each of our hearts just as The Little Star is still remembered.

Overall we really enjoyed this book. The writing is very clever and the story is engaging to both the young and old. The illustrations are beautiful and truly add to the depth of the story. I definitely recommend this book be added to your favorite Christmas stories. Perfect for reading on the night you decorate your tree.

You can purchase Little Star by Anthony DeStefano (isbn:9780307458056) for $12.99.

I received this book for free from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group for this review. All opinions expressed are my own.
