God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. (Gen 1:25)
And the question was asked, “Mommy, will Buk be in heaven?” My response, “Oh dear sweet little boy, I do hope so.” And silently in my heart I prayed, as we sat on the bedroom floor holding our precious old orange cat and we all wept tears of sadness as the lesson of goodbye echoed in each of our hearts. Even Lu in her innocence, looked up and signed “cat, sleep, shhh.”
Eph Saying Goodbye |
He was a good and faithful cat. With me through the worst and best of times. He has been my friend and companion for over 16 years. He wasn’t a gift that I wanted but one that was bestowed upon me when my friends and I were grieving the suicide death of our friend Scott. He is aptly named for Scott’s favorite author and it has always been the joke that Scott’s spirit has lived in the old cat for years.
Buk was not the traveling kind, but he moved from St. Augustine to Ft. Lauderdale when I got my first teaching job. From Ft. Lauderdale to Virgina when I went to graduate school and then to Ohio to start my adult life.
When my best friend was killed he lay in my lap while my tears dampened his fur night after night. When my boyfriend and I broke up, he kept my heart warm with his soft purrs and fuzzy chin rubs.
Buk & Bernie |
If I ever needed to look for him, he could always be found sleeping at the head of the bed on my pillow. He loved milk rings and to have his ears itched.

he was beautiful. he looks a bit like my own cat. sorry to hear that he’s passed on–it’s so hard to say goodbye to a pet.
