This past fall I was shocked to find out that Eph was struggling to learn his “letter sounds.”  I, a former teacher, had failed to notice that my son was missing this major skill. Immediately I began to look at programs that we could incorporate into home practice that were entertaining and did not make him feel like he was doing “work.” 
After reading a review of this product on another blog, I contacted Rock ‘N Learn and asked them to send me a review product.  Cindy graciously accepted and sent me the Rock ‘N Learn Phonics Volume 1 DVD for us to use.  Unlike most reviews, I asked that I be given ample time to see if the DVD really could make a difference.
We got the DVD the last week in October and put it in the TV. Eph (and Lu) immediately started bouncing and dancing to the rhythm.  He caught on well to the games and activites as they were presented.  We went through about 15 minutes on our first viewing and he told me he was done.  For Eph, with his ADHD, 15 minutes is a good amount of time. 
Over the next several weeks we regularly watched the “Letters” video [as he called it.]  We moved from the TV to the computer because it allowed us to pick the chapters more easily.  Eph also seemed to focus more on the computer than the larger TV.  Sometimes he would still use his whole body too but often he would just focus intently on the presented materials. 
Here is a short video of Eph doing the first chapter on vowels. 
If you watch closely you can see Eph moving his lips to match the video lips and you can also see him concentraing on getting the answers right. I love his honest little remark about “beating him” because you can see that he so engaged he doesn’t even realize the “him” is a digital image.
Now, I am not going to claim that Rock ‘N Learn was the sole reason that Eph finally was able to learn all his letter sounds but I will say that the Phonics 1 DVD has offered us lots of fun practice and enjoyable learning opportunities. The repetition and rhythm addressed all three senses (visual, auditory and tactile) and in the advanced chapters we are working on applying our letter sounds to word recognition.

    This is sooo cool!!! DD LOVES music. This would be perfect for her. What would I pick?? WOW! I can’t decide… I want several!! I think I would start with “Dance with Animals” because she’s so young. But then I’d eventually get “Alphabet”, “Nursery Rhymes”, “Alphabet Exercise”, and “Colors, Shapes, and Counting.”
