My family has long been a fan of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. I think they are truly my husbands favorite movies to watch and while we are careful which parts of the previous movies my 6 year old sees, he too is a huge fan of Captain Jack Sparrow.
This past Tuesday night I was privileged to see the advanced screening of the fourth installment of The Pirates of the Caribbean series. From the opening scenes of the movie when Captain Jack fails to win the release of his mate (Joshamee Gibbs) and finds out that he is being impersonated the classic wit and humor we have all come to know and love.
After a classic Jack Sparrow escape from the British army and his nemesis a recovered Barbossa (Geoffery Rush), Jack finally catches up to his impersonator. As he comes barreling in the doors of he snidely quips, ” I am here to get myself back” and after a classic pirate brawl he finds out that his impersonator is none other than Angelica (Penelope Cruz) and agrees to sign on to her crew.
Once aboard the ship, Captain Jack is surprised to learn that he has been tricked into working for none other than Blackbeard (Ian McShane), the pirate who stole his beloved Pearl. Due to a prophesy that he would die, Blackbeard’s daughter Angelica needs Jack to help him find the Fountain of Youth to save his life.
One of the most interesting plots in the movie is the journey into the White Bay and the quest to capture a mermaid in order to steal her tears. The mermaids were amazingly beautiful yet extremely disturbing. The mermaids came in swarms and to the trap that had been set for them and in the end one of them had been caught.
The young missionary (Sam Claflin), who had been brought on the ship by Angelica to save her father’s soul takes to the mermaid and does everything in his power to save her. It is eventually their love that brings about the needed tear.
Of course the movie just gets better as the Pirates fight to see who will be the one that finds the silver chalices of Ponce De Leon and the secret location of the Fountain of Youth. Do they find it? Is the notorious Blackbeard given and extended life?
If you would like to know if Captain Jack wins once again you will have to go see Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides which sails into theaters today!
