Praise: Jarritos Mexican Soda

August 18, 2011 By Melanie

Jarritos Mexican Soda has always been one of my favorite treats. I am particularly fond of the pineapple flavor and rarely venture out to try others. There is something so cool about getting your soda in a special glass bottle. Even, our local Kroger store carries them so whenever we are planning a Mexican dinner night, I usually pick up 1 or 2 to have as an extra treat for the dinner.  It is also my preferred beverage when we eat out at our local Mexican restaurant.

The Jarritos company generously sent us a box full of all 11 different flavors. Soda is not something we normally purchase to keep in the house so the kids were dying to drink them all. The kids clamored at the box, pulling out each brightly colored glass bottle and asking me what flavor it was in Spanish and English (it felt like a mini Dora the Explorer lesson). They were very disappointed to find out that we had to wait until a “special occasion” to drink the rainbow colored bottles of sweet delight.

This past Monday was Eph’s first Day at school. I decided that it would be the perfect day for a Mexican fiesta. I made a chicken enchilada casserole, black beans, guacamole, some rice and refrigerated 5 of the Jarritos sodas; pineapple, Mandarin, strawberry, fruit punch and cola.  I placed 4 little juice cups on the table so that we each could have a sampling of the different flavors to determine our favorite.

While my idea was a good one, the kids were having NO PART of my sampling idea and they each just wanted to pass around the bottles to try the different flavors.  Even my honey got in on the taste testing.

My honey’s favorite was the traditional cola. He tried to like the fruity drinks but he kept heading back to the cola. Eph loved the pineapple. He picked up strawberry a few times but in the end the pineapple won him over. I finally relented (since Eph stole my favorite) and drank the rest of the Mandarin which was excellent.  I am not sure Lu had a favorite. Trying them all by drinking from the bottles seemed to thrill her more than anything.

The next day I drank the Tamarind and was surprised how much I liked it. According to the website it is the 2nd most popular flavor (who would have guessed?). I pictured it having more of a spicy flavor but it reminded me a lot of bottled sweetened tea.
I know it sounds a bit crazy to say since I only drink Jarritos when we are eating Mexican, but we really need to start thinking about Jarritos sodas to compliment other meals. Not to mention, since they contain no high fructose corn syrup I don’t feel as bad providing them as a special treat every now and then.

From the company:
Jarritos are made with 100% natural sugar, and reflect traditional Mexican flavors in 11 delicious varieties: Tamarind, Mandarin, Fruit Punch, Jamaica, Lime, Toronja, Guava, Pineapple, Strawberry, Mango, and Mexican Cola.
