(I am combining two days because I was sick yesterday and honestly forgot to post.)
This past weekend my dear friends and I traveled to Berlin, Ohio for a two day get away in Amish Country. This was my first visit to Ohio’s Amish country and it was really beautiful. We stayed at quaint little cottage in the heart of the town.
As we walked around the town we saw many Amish and Mennonite people. They were dressed in their simple clothing, with their head coverings. They had nothing more than what was necessary. As we all know, they shun the things of the world and keep their lives simple and meaningful.
In many of the stores we went in you would see signs about “simplicity” and it made me think about how complicated many of our lives have become. I wondered how they viewed us from the secular world with our fancy bags, brightly colored clothes, cell phones and fancy baubles.
I wonder too, if there is not something sacred about their simplicity. Something that draws them closer to God because they are not distracted by the unnecessary. I don’t agree with all their practices but I do give thanks for their lessons.
During the next few weeks, leading up to the Christmas holiday, I want to truly begin to practice gratitude, to focus on the simple and to recognize the special moments that life sends my way.
