I was surfing Google Reader the other day and came across a blog that had a list of ridiculous resolutions. I wish I had saved the link because I would totally give them credit but alas I was at work and now I can’t remember. After reading the post and pondering the absurdity of some of the resolutions, I have made my own list of resolutions for the new year:
- Add more debt to my life
- Eat fast food everyday
- Give up all exercise
- Refuse to read anything but the National Enquirer
- Stop going to church
- Spread gossip and lies about all my friends
- Quit my job
- Use more plastic
- Stop Recycling
- Gain 25lbs.
Ha! Sad isn’t it? But the truth of the matter is, many of us start out each year with a list of new year’s resolutions, only to find ourselves quickly giving into our temptations and desires within a few measly weeks. No one wants to gain those 10lbs, yet we do. No one wants to hurt a friend, yet we do. No one wants to skip church, yet we do.
Don’t we owe it to ourselves to truly take time to examine our lives and take an honest assessment of our weaknesses? No one is perfect, but if we took a snap shot of our lives on January 1, 2011 would they really be much different as they were on December 31, 2011?
Instead of making meaningless resolutions, why not take time this New Year to really scrutinize the impact we have on our families, work, friends, church, and world. Why don’t we make commitments to be happier, to worry less, to disconnect more often and to genuinely embrace our gifts.
If I had to be honest with you, that list up there isn’t so far from the truth. Exaggerated yes but there are tidbits of truth in each of those resolutions. I have not been my best “me” this past year but I am taking time to contemplate the choices I made and leap into 2012 knowing that I owe myself more.
This year, I am going to try to love easier, pray deeper, eat better, run faster and further, laugh harder, spend wiser, live louder and fear less. I am going to be a better me. While I know that I won’t be perfect, I hope that when the clock strikes 11:59pm on December 31, 2012 – I can honestly say that I am a better person than I was on this day last year.
Happy New Year my friends!
Happy New You!
May 2012 bring blessings and happiness to each of you!

There have been many years when I made meaningless resolutions. I’m a worrier and get anxious often, so this year I decided to worry about nothing and pray about everything. I want God to be my guide. I wish you great success in achieving your New Year’s resolution! Beautiful post, Melissa!
