I Am Not A Dog

July 29, 2012 By Melanie

This past week I was less than eager than normal to do my weekly Cinchspiration weigh in. I had put it off an extra day because I really didn’t think that I had lost any weight. I was really surprised to see that scale run through its numbers and settle on 145.4. It was a shock to say the least. I did a little happy dance down the hallway, put on my favorite jeans and headed out the door. Feeling extra sassy.

At my dental appointment, my hygienist asked me if I had lost any weight and I was excited to tell her that I had lost 7 1/2lbs. I know that 7 1/2lbs doesn’t sound like much, but when when you think about it….

8lbs of potatoes

8lbs of butter

7.5 lbs of baby

Then you are like…WOW…7 1/2lbs is an awful lot of weight! I mean I essentially lost an entire new human and even though they are tiny, they take up a lot of space. So there I am all excited about my weight loss and what do I immediately start doing? I start thinking about ways that I can reward myself.  The only problem is that I don’t think about buying a new cute pair of shoes or shirt. No, No, I immediately start thinking about rewarding myself with food.

I was right in the middle of my mental plan to order pizza and have a coke for dinner, when I realized that I was getting ready to drive right past my favorite McDonalds. (Its like that place has some crazy magnetic force field.) I start having all those evil thoughts about sweet tea and french fries when I remember this saying I once saw on Pinterest.

YOU ARE NOT A DOG.

STOP REWARDING YOURSELF WITH FOOD.

I don’t know why but that statement rings so true for me. Every time I make any headway losing weight, I always start rewarding myself with food. And I don’t think that I am the only one. Why, oh why, do women consider food a reward? Right here, right now, I have decided that I am going to start trying to rewire my brain to stop the insanity. Not only with me but also with my children. I know it will be a challenge but I am going to try my best to change my pattern of thinking.

What about you? Do you reward yourself with food?

Do you want to join me on a quest to change our thinking?

You are so right! We often reward ourselves with food. I love it, “I am not a dog.” Your reward is tea, mine is ice cream. Ha ha! Great job on the 7 and a half pound weight loss. So inspiring!

mine is also ice cream…Tropical Blizzards to be exact. I figure if I’m going to spend those calories, it’ll be on something I dearly love…so I do treat myself now occasionally…buy a small, eat half and put the other half in freezer for another crave. but put the half in the freezer BEFORE I start to eat the first or I won’t stop.
Keep up the good work and love that u were able to stop McD’s. u r now putting the best thing in your body u can. 50 years of research works!
