We did it again! My super friend Charlotte and I signed up and participated in our 2nd mini women’s triathlon. (Want to read about our first experience, click here). It was a MUCH better experience. Not only because we actually knew what to expect but also because the event was 100% women only. The Girls Tri Too (I don’t particularly like that title, as it sounds a little childish) was held on Saturday morning and there were over 280 women participants.
The scene was significantly more relaxed than our first experience. Women of all shapes and sizes, rolling in on a whole variety of bikes, wearing an array of clothing. Yes, there were definitely those women who were all decked out looking like they were about to storm the coast, but all in all, it was significantly less overwhelming than our first experience.
So our goal was to beat our original time of 1:11:07 and improve our transition time. Personally, I hadn’t swam once since the previous time and we haven’t done any of our mock Tri’s.
Char and I got up early (like 4:30am), loaded up our bikes and headed out to Alum Creek Park. It was still dark when we arrived and we got to enjoy the sunrise over the lake. We found a good space in the transition area, popped our bikes on the racks, got “painted” (they right your age on the back of your calf), stripped down to our suits and headed to the shore.
We were lucky to bump into some of our other friends while we waited for the swim portion to begin. It was nice chatting with the other ladies. The swim went pretty well. It was deeper than the first time and no matter how hard I try, I just can’t get used to swimming in muddy water with waves splashing all around. I definitely need some coaching for next year and I need to remember to breathe.
Swim Time #1: 7:22
Swim Time #2: 7:26
The bike ride was not as good as the first time. My tire was a tad flat and I just couldn’t get into a good gear. I kept a good pace and tried to pass some of the ladies that were going slower than me. I desperately want a road bike. There is such a difference in the women who had real road bikes and those of us who were using hybrids.
Bike Time #1: 36:05
Bike Time #2: 33:58
The run was much better despite the fact that I had water in my ear. I had to walk a bit and I also looked like Tigger a few times while I bounced on one foot trying to get the water out of my ear. It’s amazing how I can run 6 miles and be exhausted but able to do it. Swim, bike and then run 2 miles…and I can barely walk.
Run Time #1: 22:17
Run Time #2: 18:49
I love the triathlon. I love the change up to my routine. I just need to get a new bike an some swim coaching. That is my aim for next year. I am going to sell some of “stuff” and then get an entry level road bike. Then next year I am aiming to do one more mini triathlon and a sprint triathlon.
Overall Time #1: 1:11:07
Overall Time #2: 1:04:40
