It was the fall of 1981. My family and I had just moved back to Florida after a few years in Texas. I was 7 and in 2nd grade. Every day at recess, I would climb up on the monkey bars and play with a girl named Dina. We were “instantly” BFFs.
After a few weeks, we found out that our grandmothers were from the same one traffic light town in South Carolina. We determined we had to be like 5th cousins or something. Her mom and aunt led our girl scout troop until we were way to old to be girl scouts. My mom left the back door open so she could just come in. We spent almost every weekend and summer night together sitting on her condo patio watching the dolphin show at Dolphin World.
Rogers Middle School Can you say hair? |
We suffered through the same middle school and most of high school together. We shared a bit of everything; drivers licenses, first loves, broken hearts. Best Friend charms that stood the test of time. Dunkin Donuts, beach bike rides, boats, first jobs, you name it. We did it together. She even met her future hubby at my senior party.
Freshman Home Coming |
Then after I headed off to college, we couldn’t stand to be apart, so she moved up (and in) to my first house. Ok, it might also have been because that future husband was in the same school but I like to pretend it was because of me.

For 32 years she has been my counterpart. I have been her voice. She has been my confidant. And even though there are miles between us and that she HATES to fly, she would be here tomorrow if I asked her to. Because she’s like that.
She’s my BFF and she is 40 today!
Forever and ever and ever.
So this post is a day early but it is a combo post for Throwback Thursday. Stop by and visit Mandi at Sweet Tiny Blessings. Throw up your throwback post!
