The major difference between having two winter babies and now a summer baby in Ohio is the weather. One of the biggest challenges for me has been the inability to comfortably babywearing in the heat. Both my other kids absolutely loved to be all snuggled up in a wrap. Their body heat plus my body heat made the perfect cocoon when we were out and about and I loved having them close while still being able to get things done.
Having a summer baby has completely changed my passion for babywearing. Instead, it has done nothing but give both me and the baby heat rash. I thought for sure between my hormones and his hot box little body one (or both) of us was going to pass out while taking a walk outside. I tried both my regular wrap as well as my soft structured carrier and he and I were literally dripping wet after about 15 minutes. It was miserable.
After a couple of failed attempts, I realized that there had to be an alternative baby carrier for use in the heat. That is how I came across the Beachfront Baby wrap. Their innovative baby wrap is billed to be used in the water but because I am a raging mess of over heated hormones, I really wanted to give it a try for everyday use. I loved the look of their light and airy fabric. Plus, getting into the pool with the baby would just be an added perk.
The Beachfront Baby sport & water wrap is made of 100% polyester jersey blend. It weighs just a fraction of what my cloth wrap weighs and the small holes helps to keep us both cooler. I knew from the minute I opened the package that this wrap was going to be perfect. The fabric has a very silky light feeling. It is stretchy but not as stretchy as traditional wrap so it did take me a few times of tying it on to get the right “feel” for carrying the baby.
I do want to emphasize that this wrap is also made to hit the beach, pool or even the shower. I personally haven’t been able to test it out in the water. Ohio has had a bit of a cold front since I got my wrap and our community pool has been way to cold for the Babe. However, I did get to test it out with a 3 hour hike in Hocking Hills during the middle of the day and it was absolutely PERFECT!
We got to the park about 1:00, right during the midday sun and started our hike. The wrap was super easy to tie on and Ez fit perfectly. He is currently about 11lbs and 24 inches. He never fussed or mussed the entire time we were hiking, nor did he sweat. Most importantly, neither did Mama! We walked about 45 minutes into the park and I didn’t feel uncomfortable even once.
At around the midway point, he wanted to eat, so I propped myself on some rocks and we had a nice meal. It isn’t recommended to nurse in the carrier, so I pulled him out and used it as a cover. Not once did I sweat or feel overheated. He got a tad sticky where his cheek was pressed up against my skin but it was NOTHING compared to what we had experienced in our other carriers.
Once we were done with our break, I popped him back in and we were off again. I climbed a zillion stairs, waded through a little river and shuffled through a cave. We spent almost 4 hours in the wrap and I never felt sweaty or like I wanted to take the wrap off. Plus Ez was also happy and content. I am really looking forward to the pool warming up a bit so he and I can try it out in the water. My guess is he and I are both going to love being able to cool off and mama is going to feel safer without having a wet wiggly baby in my arms.

I completely understand. My second was born at the end of May and he HATED being worn, I think it was because of the heat because once fall rolled around he didn’t mind it. We ended up buying a double stroller just so I could get out of the house.

Sheesh, I never thought of this. I’ve also had 2 winter babies. I will have to keep this in mind in case the next go around is in the summer!

This is wonderful, I want to try it! I got a ring sling that is made of mesh, but I think this looks more comfortable, both my babies are summer babies and we are always so hot.

I think it would be lovely to have one of these for the summer. To wear it for 4 hours without getting hot in the summer is awesome! It would be nice to have this for a newborn if its summer and you are at the beach too, before they are old enough for the baby swim floaties.
