Many parents dread daylight savings time like we dread laundry and after spaghetti dinner bath time. No matter what we do, that one single hour is just destined to wreak havoc on even the best laid out plans. Now that I am here on baby #3, I feel like I have picked up a few tips to help you and your little one sleep through the night.
5 Tips for Conquering Daylights Savings Time
- Blackout shades in the nursery. This little known secret is tops for my list. I gave up on real curtains and now only buy an accordion paper version that sticks to the window frame. Keeping the daylight out of the nursery helps your little one to adjust to their routines and sleep longer.
- Move your schedule by 10-15 minutes per day. The great thing about daylight savings time is you know exactly how much time you need to adjust. Start moving your schedule back by 10-15 minutes each day. That way you have 5-6 days to work up to that one fall back hour.
- Add an extra dose of sunshine to your day. Our circadian clocks depend completely on our exposure to sunlight. Going into the winter months, we start to experience less and less sunlight. Try to make sure that your little one is getting an extra 10-15 minutes of sunlight per day. This helps us to adjust to time changes.
- Shorten nap times for a couple of days. Now we don’t want to create over tired cranky babies but waking up your little one or moving up nap time is another way to subtly adjust your baby’s sleep schedule.
- Use Pampers diapers at night. Yes, I am a huge cloth diaper advocate but I am the first one to admit that I have yet to find bullet proof nighttime solution. Instead, I happily use a Pampers Baby-Dry diaper on my little on overnight. Pampers diapers keep my little one feeling dry and sleeping soundly. No middle of the night pajama changes for this family.
Pampers wants you and your baby to easily adjust to daylight savings time by keeping your baby dry all night long. Pampers diapers have three absorbent layers that will provide up to 12 hours of dryness for you littlest love. Hopefully a dry little tush will keep your little one and you sleeping longer and help you survive falling back one hour.

I really, truly hate daylight savings time. It makes me so jealous of people that live in AZ where they don’t have this idiocy.

This year daylight savings actually helped us get to bed earlier, since we had been having a problem getting our little one to go to bed early, but now the shorter days are really helping.
