A few months ago I met another Mama of a Deaf toddler who is also kind of crunchy in a great way. She has a fantastic store on Etsy called Zen Baby that sells all sorts of concoctions, teething jewelry and other health and beauty products. Since we already had an amber teething necklace, I had been looking for another product to feature on Sunshine Praises. I probably should have tried her sore muscle salve after the Diva Half Marathon (I will have to do it after my next long training run) but I didn’t even think of getting something for myself.
However, when I couldn’t get a grip on Ez’s most recent outbreak of eczema, I knew exactly who to call. Erica made up a concoction of all natural products specifically for me to try on Ez’s horrible dry and damaged skin. When I saw her at drop off the next day, she handed me a small mason jar full of white cream. She told me that it didn’t smell really good but honestly I thought it was very pleasant.
Her homemade eczema cream is almost like a solid powder but when you rub it on your warm skin it melts into a really smooth fine oil. Before putting it on the baby, I used it on my own dry hands. It definitely helped to reduce the overall dryness of my hands. There was a bit of an initial oily feeling but it quickly absorbed into my skin.

The next big test was the little Mister. I want to start off by saying a) he can not use ANY product that contains petroleum and b) he is prone to staph infections. After 2 days of watching him literally spending night and day digging into his poor back and legs, I was eager to put the Zen Baby cream on him. Here is day one. (Yes, that is a disposable diaper, like I said I couldn’t wait, I didn’t even change him from daycare.)
Up close photo of his back:

So first impression: He didn’t scream. Normally when I try to put on medicines or lotions he screams. He acts like his skin is on fire. I have resorted to taking his steroid cream and mixing it with a lotion and frantically blowing while administering it.
Second impression: I didn’t need that much. Just a dab covers a large area and I was able to cover all of his inflamed areas with about a teaspoon full.
Third impression: It didn’t leave him greasy or leave any marks on his clothing and I didn’t notice any issues with my cloth diapers.
Originally I had planned to do a picture a day kind of thing but I didn’t see such drastic improvement that I felt it warranted. Then just a couple of days in we had some obvious staph spots and I added just a small amount of his his steroid cream to help clear it up.

However, even with the staph, his overall dryness was significantly improving and he wasn’t scratching very much at all. I know it’s probably hard to tell but normally you can see little finger marks where he digs into his skin.
We continued to use the cream 2-3 times per day. He loved it and would bring it to me. I probably could have used the entire container in just a couple of days for as many times as he would bring it out of the bathroom.
We even made a little video: (please ignore my tiny disastrous bathroom and my son’s wobbly hands)

Thanks so much Mel! Since I got this Liam’s skin looks so much better. He had a nasty spot on his back (not as bad as Ez’s but nasty) and it cleared up in about a week. I just smother it all over his back and he has hardly scratched at all in about a week or so. I love it and agree that it actually smells good ! 🙂 Thanks for the recommendation! !
