Dirty Little Secret Inside Here

September 19, 2012 By Melanie

I have a dirty little secret that I need to confess. I try my best to be a semi-crunchy mom. I recycle, reuse, re-purpose and aim for healthy. I am not always perfect but there is one area that I have really totally failed.

I have a dirty little secret to share with all of you…

My kids still use sippy cups.

Notice the ‘s’ on the end of that. Kids, as in both of my children. As in my 7 year old and my almost 4 year old still have a variety of those pink and blue, magically mess free, no flow cups.

It started out so innocent, but now I don’t know how to stop it. My kids love love love their beverages and I hate hate hate a mess. Sippy cups are the only reasonable answer to this conundrum and since I already have about 2 dozen, it seems silly to switch to a sippy cup alternative.

I have tried to switch to sports bottles – too big. I have tried a Tervis tumbler – still spills. Double insulated plastic cups (BPA free of course) with straws – not spill proof either. There really isn’t any cup that is a safe, mess proof, sized right beverage vessel. Well, at least I haven’t found one yet.

Regardless, I know that the time has come to pack up the sippy cups and graduate my not so little ones to “big kid” cups. Here is where I need your advice. What type of cups do you use for your older children?

I wish I could help. Baby C is still on her sippy cups too. I have tried a few times to teach how to drink out of a cup, but she doesn’t get it. Good luck and keep me posted if you find something that works. I’d love to know.

      Mandi,
Just remember to take them away long before it becomes a crazy habit.

I have tried a few, the only ones I have found are the Tommee Tippee Explora Truly Spill Proof Water Bottle that I found over at toyrus one day.. they work great.

So glad to know that I’m not the only one with an ELEMENTARY age kid still in sippy cups!! My oldest (6) uses the older kid style, but without the valve. Yes, still spills but not as fast : ) I love sippy cups for the same reasons you do…who knows maybe they’ll grow out of them by middle school!!

Jen, I know, really. There has to be some type of an alternative between the sports bottle and the sippy cup.
