Any mother who has ever had a fussy or sick baby knows that it is heart wrenching. You are up at night, wandering the halls, singing sweet lullabies and whispering shhh shhh shhh over and over in your little ones ears. You jiggle them. Rock them. You do the magic combo – jiggle, rock, shhh shhh Mommy thing. It’s natural. Almost innate.
Except, when your little one is Deaf.
When he is arching his back, eyes closed, completely engrossed in his own unhappiness every one of those natural Mommy tactics is worthless. You can’t exactly open his eyes and force him to look at you so you can sign comforting words. You can’t force him to hear. You can’t comfort him in a way that feels natural to you.
So you come up with other alternatives. You offer more milk which is instantly thwarted. You try a more vigorous (yet safe) rocking motion. You pat him on the back a little harder. You try baby wearing or different holding positions.
Then when you are both exhausted, you wave your white muslin blanket in surrender and lay down on the bed. You place him belly down on your chest. His ears and cheek smooshed up against your skin.
He instantly settles.
You rub his wee little back and he lets out a sigh of relief.
Slowly his breathing becomes rythmatic and you realize that he has connected to the
The Silent Beat of Your Heart.

It’s funny how magical the bond between a mom and her child is. I can’t imagine how different it must be at this young age with him, but it sounds like you’re doing a fantastic job.
