Last Tuesday night, my son and I had the pleasure of attending the premier of Marvel’s The Avengers here in Ohio. Over the last year or so, I have been fortunate to see several early showings of Disney movies, so I was surprised when we arrived 45 minutes early to find a line that literally circled the building. Fortunately, because we were guests of the media company we were able to bypass the line and get our seats.
The energy in the room was exhilarating. Men (and surprisingly a lot of women) of all ages were wearing their Captain America and Hulk shirts. Kids carried mini action figures in their hands and excited chatter filled the room. When the lights finally dimmed, the music started and Iron Man came jetting onto the screen everyone clapped then a hushed silence grew over the theater.
Eph sat with eager anticipation on the edge of the over sized IMAX chairs. His eyes were as wide as his smile. It wasn’t until about 3/4 of the way through the movie that he made his first little fidget. He was truly entranced into the movie. I was even a bit surprised by how many jokes that he caught on to.
Marvel’s The Avengers far exceeded my expectations. Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man was hands down my favorite character. His witty commentary was the highlight of the movie for me. He played Iron Man perfectly and my guess is that he will long be held as the standard for the character. Secondly, I though Mark Ruffalo was fantastic as Bruce Banner/Hulk. He played so well into the constant nervous energy (absolute fear) that surrounded him.
I was also impressed with the special effects and 3D. I normally don’t recommend seeing something in 3D, I don’t think pay an extra $4.50 is really worth it but for The Avengers, I say SPLURGE! The 3D effects really make this movie pop. During the movie you could see heads swaying out of the way of flying arrows and aliens.
When I posted on my personal and Sunshine Praises Facebook pages about seeing the move, several moms asked what I thought was a good age for the movie. Here are my thoughts: The movie is high energy, loud and has several graphic scenes in which people are killed or injured. In the beginning of the movie there is a scene that implies torture that my son kind of turned away from. There is also a scene towards the end when a human character, who everyone is fond of dies.
So this is my recommendation: The Avengers is definitely a family movie but it is rated PG-13 for a reason. Eph, at age 7, enjoyed the movie, yet, being easily over stimulated had a meltdown after we left the theater. It took him almost 2 days to process it all and tell me the scenes he liked. That is normal from him and what I expected. I say if you kid is sensitive, you might consider just seeing it in 2D. There is a great lesson about accepting our differences, being a good team player and always fighting for the greater good that should resonate with any kid (or adult).
Here is a clip from the movie. It was one of my favorites.
If you haven’t seen the movie already or didn’t want to fight the crowds. Get out and see it this weekend. The Avenger’s broke box office records and I know for sure that you won’t be disappointed.

Loved this movie which is surprising because I don’t like comic or super hero movies.
