Last summer, little man was just too small to really appreciate the pool. (Nor did I want to scare any toddlers with my post pregnancy body.) However, now he is a bathtub squealing, dog waterbowl dumping, water baby. When our pool opens on Friday, I have no doubt we are going to be spending hours upon hours in the [frigid] water.
When you spend multiple hours a day in the pool, buying disposable swim diapers just doesn’t make financial sense. Especially when a reusable swim diaper costs about the same as one pack of disposables but can get you through the entire summer. Although I would recommend at least 2, if not 3. Just in case you unexpectedly find you need another one.
Knowing that Ez is a little water baby, I requested a BabyKicks swim diaper for review when we were in Florida last month. The swim diaper is made up of a single layer of soft stretchy PUL and lined with a comfy mesh. There is a completely elasticized waist and leg gussets to keep solids in. Plus no ripping or tearing the sides like in disposables because of the nifty side snaps.
The BabyKicks Swim Diaper comes in 4 sizes:
Small: 11-18lbs
Medium: 16-21lbs
Large: 21-35lbs
XLarge: 35-48lbs
When I ordered the diaper, I really debated between the Medium and the large. At the time he was just at 20lbs. I wanted to make sure the diaper was snug and would contain any solid messes. Let’s remember the purpose of ANY swim diaper (disposable or reusable) is only to contain solid messes. Urine will always run out a swim diaper. In the end, I went with the large and am glad that we did.
Fortunately or unfortunately, depending how you look at it, we didn’t really get to test out the effectiveness of the diaper. (If you know what I mean.) However, we did have a great fit, with room to grow. The diaper was very trim under his swim suit and there weren’t any significant red marks left on his legs or waist.
The BabyKicks swim diaper comes in one gender neutral pattern – Anchors Away. It is retails for for $13.95 and can be purchased directly from BabyKicks and many other of cloth diapering stores.
Reusable swim diapers are great, even if you don’t cloth diaper!

Super cute! We’ve been looking for the perfect swim solution for our 11 week old (though she won’t be joining us in the pool for a little while longer) that will do a decent job of trapping in that EBF poo!

I have a 7-month old and we’re new to cloth diapering. I was just wondering aloud to my husband whether or not cloth swim diapers existed. And then I come across your post! I’m putting Baby Kicks on my shopping list, thank you!
Also thanks for the heads up about sizing!

I’ve never tried a swim dipe before. Its nice to know the fit of this one was good. Nothing is worse than taking off a diaper to find red lines on those little legs (ok, maybe SOME things are worse!). Plus, this one is super cute!

Cloth swim diapers are so much easier to use than disposables. And so much cuter too!
