When my son was born, I was adamant that I was going to breastfeed for the first year of his life. I regularly told people how I just knew that breastfeeding was going to be easy for me because it was natural.  After a very difficult delivery of a huge baby boy, we started breastfeeding immediately and from moment one, it was hard.  After about 4 weeks of intense pain, multiple visits to the lactation consultant and on recommendation from my pediatrician we switched to formula.

Now, like many mother’s I had been given a large variety of samples and checks for brand name formulas. Each one touting the reasons why their product is better than then rest. It was very confusing to me and as a new mom, I wanted to choose the right product that would give my son the best nutrition. 

I was drawn to the inexpensive store brand products on the shelf and began to research the quality of store brand vs. name brand products. I was shocked (and thrilled) to find out that because of the The Infant Formula Act that all infant formulas manufactured in the United States adhere to the same strict FDA nutritional guidelines. Which meant that regardless of the shiny package, checks and freebies that the store brand products would provide the same quality nutrition at a lesser price.

With all that being said, I was happy to hear that store brand formulas won a victory in court this past month when the court upheld a $13.5 million dollar false advertising claim against Enfamil maker Mead Johnson. The case centered around one pieced of mail in which Mead Johnson claimed “store brand” infant formula was inferior to its Enfamil LIPIL.

The reason this ruling is so important is because no longer will brand name formula companies get away providing misleading information regarding store band formulas.
