Book Praise: Does This Church Make Me Look Fat by Rhoda Janzen

October 31, 2012 By Melanie

Traditionally, I am not a book reviewer. I am not one of those people who can sit down and finish a book in a couple of days. However, when I was offered this review for Rhoda Janzen’s new book, Does This Church Make Me Look Fat? (and given a month to read it), I had to say yes and I am glad I did.

First of all, this book is superbly well written. Mrs. Janzen’s obvious love of the English language shows through in every sentence. It is easy to read, light, engaging and stimulating. It kept me on every syllable and am kind of jealous of her beautiful prose.

The story is a memoir of her transition back into a faith life. As a Christian, I am always interested in how one will leave their belief system for a period of time, only to find their way back. Ms. Janzen does an amazing job of highlighting what most secular people believe of Christians and how difficult it is to transition from a non believer to a believer.

Back in the day, I seriously dated a guy who came from a Mennonite background. Both of his parents were raised Mennonite and left the church when they pursued their educations at Yale. When we would go “home” to the family farm, it was like traveling back in time. His grandparents were still Mennonite, spoke in old Dutch and were actively involved in their community. I think they secretly like me, because I was fascinated by their culture and language. I would ask a zillion questions and so badly wanted to attend a church service, although was never invited. Reading her book, brought back some really fond memories of that period in my life, where I too became reinterested in my faith.

Does This Church Make Me Look Fat, is a wonderful memoir that will tug at your heartstrings, make you laugh out loud, and help you to understand that faith is a journey that can take you all kinds of places. It is a beautiful story of hope, love and faith. You won’t want to pass it up.

If you are looking a fantastic read. Pick up Rhoda’s Janzen’s new book today. You won’t be disappointed.

I haven’t read an adult book in so long. I have never heard of this book before, but it sounds so good! That’s why I would love to win!

So many people seem to get caught up in the “duty” aspect of worship and seem to forget the “joy” component. It sounds like Ms. Janzen “gets it”, and therefore I would LOVE to read her book!
