Cloth Diaper Praise: Smart Snugs

**I was provided a Smart Snugs cloth diaper at a discounted rate. I was not asked to complete a review of the diaper. All thoughts and opinions were dreamed up in my own little mind and definitely were not in any way influenced.

The Smart Snug diaper line is a another “new to me” diaper since I stopped cloth diapering in 2010. I reached out to their company and offered to review one of their diapers but unfortunately my current “numbers” were to low to meet their requirements so instead they offered a very nice discount to purchase their SimpleSnug diaper. Truthfully if I had been given a choice, I probably would have purchased the NatureSnug with the bamboo-charcole but I am very pleased with the Simple Snug.

For this review I tested out the Simple Snug cover with the 6-layer bamboo insert with guessets.

Appearance

The Simple Snug diaper comes in a soft polyester PUL. I have found that the softer the cover, the more I tend to grab for it. This diaper is no exception. I really like the elastic on the back of the diaper that gives it a little “bunch” on the back. Almost like a longer separate waist which seems to help keep those messes that come straight up my little guys back. The insert is surprisingly thick.

Performance

This diaper is a great day time diaper. I especially like the guessets on in the inserts for holding in the EBF infant poop. Almost all my AI2 diapers without the double gussets make a big mess and it is impossible to reuse the covers as intended. However, even though the poo isn’t getting out of the insert, I have yet to be able to reuse a cover because the inside microfleece lining is always sopping wet. I don’t know if my little guy just tends to pee upwards or what, but that strip is always wet making it impossible not to have to wash it. I also like the double snaps on the wings. There is something about the 2 rows of snaps that make diaper look more neat looking front.

Fit

The Simple Snug has a very generous fit. As a one size diaper, I can definitely see this diaper lasting well into the toddler years. He was about 10lbs when we first started with the diaper and we had to use the cross over button to make it small enough. Now at about 14lbs he is wearing it on small level. It isn’t the trimmest diaper at this point but I am sure as he grows, this diaper is going to be one of the ones that I grab for under his clothes.

Cost

The Simple Snug cover costs $14.95 and a 3 pack of inserts are $19.50. If you are only able to get one use out of the cover, like I have been able to, then the diaper will cost $21.45. The quality of this diaper would make it worth spending that amount on more diapers but not until I can actually get a few uses out of each cover. You can bring down the price of the diaper by buying one of their bundles or mystery packs.

Overall

The Simple Snug AI2 is a quality diaper at a reasonable price. I find myself reaching for the diaper when it is clean and have considered just purchasing a couple more covers to use with my other inserts. The one thing that I haven’t mentioned about the inserts is that they take FOREVER and a day to dry. I have been putting the inserts in the dryer and they still come out damp. It just shows how unbelievably thirsty these diapers can be. I do think I in addition to two more covers, I will probably try out their NatureSnug bamboo pocket diaper.
