On the Run: RunCbus 10 Miler

April 12, 2011 By Melanie

Shortly after weaning my daughter and realizing that the 60lbs that I lost after her birth were not going to stay off on their own, I decided to take up running.  I know, it is the “cool” thing to do right now but I really wanted something to motivate me keep fit.

I don’t do a huge amount of training but I do try to run 6-9 miles per week and I have some personal goals for this running season.  I enjoy getting out and taking a run with a friend or my head phones.

Yesterday was my first race of the season.  I don’t know what I was thinking last December when I signed up to run 10 miles but I did.  I wasn’t nearly prepared as I could have been but I made it all 10 miles in less time than I had anticipated.

I couldn’t have done it without my dear friend Char.  She stayed with me, even though she has a much quicker pace and I walked a little more than she would have if she was on her own.  I am so thankful for having a good friend to mentally push me up the hill when I wanted to give up.

Here is a picture of us after the race!

This was the inagural year for the RunCbus 10 miler put on by Second Sole Racing and overall I enjoyed the race. The course was quite hilly and brought people though a variety of local neighborhoods, parks and main roads. There was one steep hill that kind of felt like I was going up a roller coaster and a rickety rackety old bridge that I was sure might collapse after 1,300 people ran over it.  The one thing that would have made it better for me is if the water stations had been spaced out a little more evenly.  I was dying for water by the time I got to the 5 mile mark. Either way, it was a great race to start out the season for me and if it offered again next year, I probably would sign up.

I am still trying to decided what my May race will be there are so many choices. I will be sticking to the 5K’s until this fall when I meet up with my Florida girls for a half marathon.

Until next time…Run Happy! (Stole that from a friend)

I think it helps to stay motivated when you have a friend to run with, so I need to find a running buddy soon!
